IoTDB, an open source software from Tsinghua University, breaks the database world record

On August 30, in the latest international authoritative database performance benchmark list released by relevant international organizations, TimechoDB, a localized time series database software developed based on Apache IoTDB initiated by Tsinghua University, refreshed the IoT scenario list TPCx-IoT, breaking the world record in both performance and system cost dimensions. Compared with the second place, its performance index increased by 86% and the system cost decreased by 68%, surpassing the related products of well-known companies such as Dell, AMD, and TTA in South Korea.

In recent years, as the process of industrial digital transformation continues to deepen, the value of data for reducing costs, increasing efficiency and improving quality in the manufacturing industry has been continuously explored. From "Made in China 2025" to the "14th Five-Year Plan", and then to the Third Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee emphasizing "improving and strengthening the development system and mechanism of key industrial chains such as basic software and industrial software, and promoting technological breakthroughs and application of results throughout the chain", my country has continuously introduced policies to promote technological breakthroughs and industrial applications of basic software such as high-performance databases. As a new type of database technology responsible for storing and managing massive data reported by industrial equipment sensors, time series databases are becoming an important foundation for promoting industrial digitalization.

IoTDB time series database technology originated from the industrial big data team of the School of Software, Tsinghua University. Over the past decade, with the support of national nuclear high-tech, key R&D plans, and industrial Internet innovation and development projects, the team has innovatively developed core technologies such as ultra-high compression ratio file formats, end-edge cloud data collaborative architecture, and time series AI big models, breaking through a series of core problems of database basic software, enabling enterprises to achieve more timely and efficient management of time series data with lower operation and maintenance and deployment costs.


At the same time, IoTDB-related technologies and system achievements have been successfully applied in thousands of industrial enterprises in the world in energy and power, steel smelting, aerospace, petroleum and petrochemical, smart factories, and Internet of Vehicles. Its users include China National Nuclear Corporation, State Grid, Baowu Steel, CISDI, AVIC Chengfei, CRRC, Changan Automobile, Bosch Rexroth, Deutsche Bahn, Petronas, and other leading domestic and foreign industry companies.


This also means that the scientific and technological innovation achievements from Tsinghua University have not only proved that domestic databases are leading the global frontier at the technical level, but also are fully meeting the management needs of massive time series data in the industrial field in industrial applications, providing new quality productivity for the development of new global industrialization.
